I think I'm on the right track, since I've stopped sketching and rendering and started to paint for a change.

Edit: decided to kill off the WIP posts below, it was kind of tedious to go through it all.

Thesis sketches

This is my graduate yeear at the Art Academy, so I'm supposed to come up with a concept to develop into a thesis artwork - an artifact, or an art installation, or whatever - that would hopefully sum-up all that I've learned at the academy and hopefully provide insights into some formal and philosophical issues that I might like to raise. So, I'm focusing on cartography, which I think is a subject matter of considerable relevance to art, and particularly to painting. I believe that we live in a faulty world which is misrepresented by faulty maps that use manipulative projections and culturally imposed conventions (e.g. North must be up, while South must be down, etc.), and as such, maps are a poster child for a simulated reality that permeates our cultures. So anyways, here I present some smaller-scale sketches on paper or canvas that should help me develop the idea.

End of the Year Exhibition at ALU Zagreb

This article, which features a photo of my colleagues and me, and our recent work, was published today in the Croatian weekly "Globus." The article announces end-of-the-year exhibition hosted at the Zagreb Academy of Fine Arts between 3 and 9 June 2011.

Pine Tree Bay En Plein Air

Did this with a really cheap set of tempera from a supermarket, albeit on a relatively decent 50x60 canvas. I wish I had brought my oil colors with me during this short visit to the Pine Tree Bay, but what the heck.

The Last Nude

Today was the last nude-drawing class I'll ever have at the Academy. During the last four years of studying, I had them four times a week, in two 45-minutes sessions, Monday through Thursday. Due to their abundance I have often posted nude drawings on this blog; they'd fill in nicely whenever I haven't had anything else to put. But now, all that is gone; the formal nude-drawing education is finished. I can hardly say that this drawing is the best one I've done in the last four years, but it'll certainly hold a special place for me.
